Writer Interviews

SOFLES : DTS

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I started off writing Wooks, about 6 years ago, then changed to Sofle about 4 years ago. I started writing RFW then went to DTS a few years later. My childhood? It was sweet, I was a bit sheltered tho, maybe that's what did it.

How did you choose your tag, any special meaning?

It's some stupid high school joke. I wish I'd come up with something better, I sound like a box of tissues or something out of a Hallmark card.

How did you get in to graffiti?

I started in 2000, in art class a few of the writers invited me on a mission, and suggested I do some letters instead of characters. Graffiti seemed pretty interesting, and after a few pieces I just wanted to get better as quick as I could.

What is it that you love about graffiti that keeps you writing?

U can do what u want with it. There's always going to be a theme or colour scheme that hasn't been done. There's always going to be people that are heaps better than u, so u always have heels to clip.

Tell us about your style and how it has developed over the years.

I started out wanting to do 3Ds but after a few failed attempts at them i went with a more traditional style. I try as many styles as I can, to keep my shit looking different. These days, even if a style's wak, if u paint it clean and tell people it's good, then it's good.

Who have been your major influences?

Some of the first shit I saw that blew my mind was Blends, it looked so different than the rest, bubbly cut back, grimy shit. The fine tuning of my graffiti was fastened when I was painting with Seiko and Blends in 2005, we were painting 3 times a week and developing a lot of ideas between us.

Paint brand of choice

What brand of paint? Are u serious?

Cap of choice

Noooo York Nooooo York!

What music motivates you to paint?

Hip hop

Memorable mission moment

Thinking the trains were shunting forward and backwards in the yard. They weren't shunting I was just too fucked on who knows what. Pulled a panel though. Loose night.

Any tips you're willing to share to the next generation of writers?

Don't bite your elders!

Anything else to add?

Graffiti ruined my life...
