Writer Interviews

DETCH : SWB

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

DETCH ONE ++SWB CREW++ Aussie born and bred! Grew up in Sydney went to school with good friend and now long time partner in crime Mr Perso where we started tagging on anything that we could get away with.. that was literally 20 years ago.... Moved to the country for a bit then came back to the city where I was arrested about 5 times for graff before I'd turned 19...got off 'em tho hahahahah!!

How did you choose your tag, any special meaning?

Detch was handed down to me by a good friend about 93 (thanks ROBER).. I always liked this tag - I always thought it sounded mean ...  like me ahah

How did you get in to graffiti?

Circa 83 -- Me and Perso egged each other on all fuckin day.. and we used to rack Poscas (how kitsch) and tag all over the bus, bus stops, school books ..whatever -- anyone  remember the subway art trading cards? They came out when the book came out. wayyy back, they were an influence.

What is it that you love about graffiti that keeps you writing?

Producing mad art.. Tagging is fun but I always seem to get in shit, I mostly only tag when I travel now..the rush of doing illegal shit is fun but seriously mate getting charged for this shit is fucked... save jail for armed robs or something more useful..

Tell us about your style and how it has developed over the years.

My style is an older one, very Sydney.. My letter styles and connections are not the most super tech... if I aint feeling it why bother pushing it.. plus I lay very low. Most writers from this generation have never heard of me, which suits me perfectly..fame was never my goal.

Who have been your major influences?

DMOTE, PRINS, PHIB, SACH, TAVEN, PUZLE, MERDA.

In the early days I reckon I would have bitten these guys on a daily basis.. Still to this day you can see the influences ( Same with Percy) but I can do my own sketches now , thank you very much. Tattoo art is also a big influence

Paint brand of choice

Molotow, Sabotaz, black RAL

Cap of choice

Black dot

What music motivates you to paint?

Listening to Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the moment.. Surprisingly good.

Memorable mission moment

Too many plus my reputation as a drunken maniac is already ahead of itself... I was drugged and left for dead in Brissy tho - that one is a cracker..

Any tips you're willing to share to the next generation of writers?

These are the tips I got.. respect your elders , if you can't burn it you can't go over it, practice practice and no tagging on my mum's house hahaha!!!
